Hexagram 33

Dùn, Save your bacon

Gua Poem:
Retreat, expansion. Small profit from divination

The great image says: The world has mountains: withdraw. The noble one distances himself from small people, without dislike and yet stern.

Dùn: the ideogram and the story. (NEW) What does it mean for your question?
This hexagram is complementary to hex.19, caring about others. Try to find the balance between those two, not too open, not too closed.

Top 9: Fertile retreat. Nothing that does not bear fruit
Only in retreat the spirit can find its inner riches. Places full of noise and people are never spiritually rich places, but even there one can stay rich if one can stay aloof inside. Sometimes it is necessary to leave a situation in order to find yourself back.

9 at 5: Praised retreat. Divination auspicious.
Withdraw to the small area where you are good and where you know the way. No use doing something big and not being able to handle it.
Or: do something well, and after that neither you yourself nor anyone else will begrudge your time of leisure or even laziness.

9 at 4: Loving retreat. Noble men: auspicious, small men: obstruction.
Withdraw to the small area where you are good and where you know the way. No use doing something big and not being able to handle it.
Or: do something well, and after that neither you yourself nor anyone else will begrudge your time of leisure or even laziness.

9 at 3: Attached retreat. There is disease and danger. To keep slaves and concubines is auspicious.
In everything one does or meets, there are lower aspects. Stress, disappointment, misunderstanding, claims, wrong people. Do not fight them, just retreat from them, untie yourself, let them go and move on. If you have a set of values you can fall back on, it is easier, so make that base solid.
(Changes to hex.12)    Mirror

6 at 2: Shackle it using yellow ox hide. Under no circumstances will it be capable of getting loose.
Hold on to your true self and to what you see as important. Then you will in all circumstances have the right reaction. Because it will not be formed by the circumstances but by your inner core. There is no law of being consistent towards the world, but to yourself there is.
(Changes to hex.44)  Mirror

Initial 6: At the tail of the retreat, danger. Do not proceed probing!
You are retreating from danger or trouble, maybe already solved a big part, but don't think this is it. You are still too close to it, so be careful, don't act impulsively, reckon with everything which still can go wrong, even if it seems small and unimportant.
(Changes to hex.13) Mirror

No lines changing: you can try to do things, but they may fail or even backfire. If there's nothing that should (or can) be done, then this might be a good time to relax and refuel. The Poem and the Image are guides that show you the best way to do that.

The Trigrams offer possibilities that the hexagram-texts don't show.
