Hexagram 40

Jiě, Release

Gua Poem:
Release. Fruitful: west and south. With no direction to go, going about one's business is auspicious. Having a direction to go, going early is auspicious.

The great image says: Thunder and rain at work: release. The noble one pardons transgressions and is lenient towards crimes.

Jiě: the ideogram and the story (NEW) What does it mean for your question?
This hexagram is complementary to hex.37.

Top 6: The prince shoots a falcon on the top of a high rampart. He hits it. Nothing that does not bear fruit.
To be one with a target means one will inevitably hit it. There is the story about Arjuna who didn't see a wall or a bird, only an eye. He cannot miss.
(Changes to hex.64)  Mirror

6 at 5: The tether rope of a noble one leaves freedom. Auspicious. Inspiring trust in small people.
A free mind cannot be bound and does not bind others. It makes people trust and follow. In order to make others listen to you, honor them for what they are, and give them the freedom they deserve to be themselves.
(Changes to hex.47)  Mirror

9 at 4: Release, also the thumb. Partners arrive especially true.
The thumb has no brain, you have to keep it in line by thinking before you let it push that big red button. In old times release the arrow, in all times the oppression of other people. If you don’t know enough, then open up for information, ask friends and experts. Many people like to help with what they know.
(Changes to hex.7)  Mirror

6 at 3: Carrying a burden on the back and also riding a carriage. Inviting robbers to approach. Divination distress.
Learn how to behave in society. If you don’t know what can be done and what not, you will get embarrassed or worse, and you yourself are the only one to blame. At first sight following rules seems less free, but the contrary is true. If you know and employ the right behavior, you dance through the world, and everything will cooperate. If you refuse the lessons, you will step on all toes, and they will step on yours.
(Changes to hex.32)  Mirror

9 at 2: At the hunt catching three foxes. Acquiring a gold arrow. Divination auspicious.
Find freedom and relief from tension by overcoming negative elements in the inner or outer world. It will benefit your own soul, your recognition and your environment.
(Changes to hex.16)  Mirror

Initial 6: Without fault.
Blame is useless and even harmful. When things happen and cannot be undone, then the only useful reaction is to learn from them and if possible to repair what can be repaired. Don't blame yourself or anyone else, ever.
(Changes to hex.54)  Mirror

No lines changing: you can try to do things, but they may fail or even backfire. If there's nothing that should (or can) be done, then this might be a good time to relax and refuel. The Poem and the Image are guides that show you the best way to do that.

The Trigrams offer possibilities that the hexagram-texts don't show.
